A lack of housing supply is driving an affordability crisis in the United States, resulting in a record number of cost-burdened renting households. At the same time, inflation is further pressuring household budgets, exacerbating the urgent need to address rising housing costs and relieve some of the financial strain plaguing millions of American renters. This brief suggests ways to boost overall supply by bringing down housing costs in the multifamily market.
